    9 Types of Depression and Their Symptoms to Identify Them

    Depression is a condition, more specifically, constant feeling of sadness and loss of interest, which stops you from doing your normal activities. Now, there are various types of depression that one can suffer in his or her life. However, let’s take a look at all the types and their symptoms so that you can identify which type you are suffering from and so you can go to the doctor or MAO inhibitor doctor for treatment.

    Forms of Depressions

    There are nine types of depression that one can suffer from, which are:

    1. Major Depression

    It is also known as major depressive disorder, unipolar depression, or classic depression. It is common in 16.2 million adults in the US. Its symptoms are:

    • Unexplained aches and pains.
    • Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much.
    • Lack of concentration, memory problems, and inability to make decisions.
    • Despondency, gloom, or grief.
    • Constant worry and anxiety.
    • Feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness.
    • Thoughts of death, self-harm, or suicide.

    2. Persistent Depression

    Now, persistent depressive disorder is depression that lasts for two years or more. Besides, it is also called dysthymia or chronic depression. Its symptoms are:

    • Lack of interest in things you once enjoyed.
    • Deep sadness or hopelessness.
    • Low self-esteem or feelings of inadequacy.
    • Social withdrawal.
    • Appetite changes.
    • Difficulty functioning at school or work.
    • Inability to feel joy, even on happy occasions.

    3. Manic Depression or Bipolar Disorder

    Manic depression consists of stages of hypomania or mania, where you feel very happy, alternating with episodes of depression. Its symptoms are:

    • Feelings of sadness or emptiness.
    • Lack of energy.
    • Sleep problems.
    • Decreased activity.
    • Trouble concentrating.
    • Loss of interest in formerly enjoyable activities.
    • Suicidal thoughts.
    • High energy.
    • Increased self-esteem and confidence.
    • Racing thoughts and speech.
    • Unusual, risky, and self-destructive behavior.

    4. Depressive Psychosis

    Well, people with major depression also go through periods of losing touch with reality. That is known as psychosis that can involve delusions and hallucinations. Now, if you experience both of these together is known clinically as a major depressive disorder with psychotic features. Many refer to this phenomenon as psychotic depression or depressive psychosis. Some of its symptoms are:

    • Problem sitting still.
    • Slow physical movements.

    5. Perinatal Depression

    Perinatal depression is clinically known as a major depressive disorder with peripartum onset. It occurs while pregnancy or within four weeks of childbirth. It’s often called postpartum depression as well. Its symptoms are:

    • Anger or rage.
    • Difficulty caring for yourself or the new baby.
    • Extreme worry about the baby‘s health and safety.
    • Thoughts of self-harm or harming the baby.

    6. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

    The premenstrual dysphoric disorder is a simple form of premenstrual syndrome. Now, the premenstrual dysphoric disorder symptoms are mostly psychological, which are as follows:

    • Cramps, bloating, and breast tenderness.
    • Joint and muscle pain.
    • Irritability and anger.
    • Extreme mood swings.
    • Food cravings or binge eating.
    • Panic attacks or anxiety.
    • Trouble focusing.
    • Sleep problems.

    7. Seasonal Depression

    Seasonal depression is also known as seasonal affective disorder and medically known as a major depressive disorder with seasonal patterns. Some symptoms are:

    • Increased need for sleep.
    • Social withdrawal.
    • Weight gain.
    • Daily feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or unworthiness.

    8. Situational Depression

    Situational depression is clinically known as adjustment disorder with depressed mood. Its symptoms are:

    • Sadness and hopelessness.
    • Frequent crying.
    • Social withdrawal.
    • Difficulty sleeping.
    • Appetite changes.
    • Lack of energy and fatigue.
    • Aches and pains.
    • Inability to concentrate.

    9. Atypical Depression

    Atypical depression actually is a depression that provisionally goes away in response to positive events. Its symptoms are:

    • Increased appetite and weight gain.
    • Poor body image.
    • Sleeping much more than usual.
    • Disordered eating.
    • Assorted aches and pains.
    • Feelings of rejection and sensitivity to criticism.
    • Heaviness in your arms or legs that lasts an hour or more a day.
